This antique Persian Bijar kilim rug is an outstanding example of the renowned Bijar weaving tradition. It is admired for its exceptional durability, fine weave, and richly detailed patterns, even when crafted in flatweave (kilim) form rather than the more familiar pile carpets.

The rug presents an allover lattice design filled with rows of small boteh (paisley) motifs, floral sprays, and stylised leaves, tightly arranged across a deep navy or black ground. The boteh, a classic Persian symbol representing life, fertility, and eternity, appears in alternating shades of red, rust, ivory, and soft blues, producing a rhythmic, jewel-like visual effect. Despite the density of the design, the layout remains balanced and harmonious, a signature feature of Bijar weaving.

Multiple narrow borders frame the central field. The main border features a graceful meandering vine with small rosettes and blossoms on a warm red ground, enclosed by slimmer guard stripes with repeating floral and geometric elements, adding a delicate layer of ornamentation.

Bijar kilims, like their pile-woven counterparts, are known for their exceptionally tight and precise construction, making them sturdy and highly resistant to wear. This piece, likely woven in the late 19th or early 20th century by Kurdish artisans in the Bijar region, beautifully reflects their skill in combining intricate design with richly dyed natural colours.

Explore the artistry of our authentic vintage kilims and flatweave rugs. These pieces are carefully handwoven using only the finest natural materials, such as pure wool, silk, and cotton, resulting in exceptional works of art. Our specialist restoration workshops expertly secure these vintage art pieces, guaranteeing many more years of enjoyment. To enhance durability and longevity, we highly recommend using a rug pad with a grip back to keep your kilim in place on the floor, smooth out any shipping wrinkles, and protect it from deterioration.

Our product photography skillfully captures the naturalistic colours of our one-of-a-kind products using gentle natural light, although the colours may appear different depending on your device. Before shipping, every kilim undergoes a meticulous stretching process to ensure it arrives straight and flat. Due to its unique and handmade nature, vintage kilim may display slight variations.
