This vintage Qashqai Persian rug is a striking handwoven woollen textile, renowned for its tribal precision, rich colours, and geometric artistry. Made by the Qashqai nomadic people of southern Iran, it showcases the depth of their cultural symbolism and exceptional weaving skills.
The rug’s central field features a bold hexagonal medallion in deep red, intricately framed with stepped ivory outlines and anchored by a central lozenge motif. Surrounding the medallion is a layered background that transitions from deep midnight blue to rust and brown, filled with scattered tribal motifs such as stylised leaves, rosettes, and bird-like figures each element holding symbolic meaning related to protection, fertility, and nature.
Multiple borders frame the composition. The main border is especially vibrant, filled with a continuous series of geometric floral forms and diamond patterns in tones of ivory, red, indigo, and orange. These motifs are typical of Qashqai design, often used to convey a sense of movement and harmony.
The wool used is soft yet durable, dyed with natural pigments that give the rug its rich, saturated palette and slight variations in tone. The weave is tight and dense, not only enhancing the clarity of the design but also testifying to the technical mastery of the weaver.
This piece is both a functional floor covering and a work of tribal art, ideal for adding warmth, character, and cultural depth to any interior, from rustic homes to eclectic modern spaces. Its geometric complexity and grounded palette make it a timeless example of Persian nomadic craftsmanship.
