This antique Caucasian Shirvan kilim rug is a vibrant and sharply executed example of flatweave craftsmanship from the Shirvan region, located in the eastern Caucasus. Known for its fine weave and bold geometric designs, this piece showcases the lively spirit and precision typical of Shirvan tribal kilims.

The central design features three stacked diamond medallions filled with serrated and stepped motifs, creating a strong visual spine down the centre of the deep indigo field. Flanking the central medallions are smaller angular elements, including latch-hook shapes, diamond rosettes, and stylised animals or amulets, adding layers of symbolic meaning and movement.

The colour palette is bright and saturated, with fiery reds, rich indigo blues, soft ivory, warm ochre, pale green and coral accents all produced with natural vegetable dyes. The borders are beautifully detailed: the wide outer border shows a bold zigzag or ram’s horn motif symbolising strength and protection, framed by narrower guard stripes with delicate reciprocal patterns.

Shirvan kilims are especially prized for their fine slit-weave technique, which allows for crisp, sharply defined geometric patterns. This rug likely dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and would have been woven by nomadic or village women for dowry, ceremonial use, or trade.
