Antique Caucasian "LESGHI STAR" Kilim 9' x 6'
SIZE: 9 X 6 FT.
ORIGIN: CAUCASUS
CIRCA: 1900s
MATERIAL: PURE WOOL
This antique Caucasian Lesghi star kilim rug is a striking example of flat-woven tribal artistry. It is celebrated for its bold geometry, brilliant colour contrasts, and iconic eight-pointed star motifs, known as the Lesghi stars.
At the heart of the rug are two large Lesghi star medallions, powerful, angular, eight-pointed forms with sharp serrated edges, filled with intricate linear hooks and crosses. These stars, set against a rich red ground, are flanked by smaller stars and geometric rosettes, giving the field a vibrant, dynamic energy. The Lesghi star is one of the most recognisable and prized motifs in Caucasian weaving, symbolising protection, guidance, and cosmic harmony.
The colour palette is vivid and beautifully balanced: deep indigo, ivory, soft green, camel, and muted coral, all drawn from natural vegetable dyes, create sharp visual contrasts against the red field. The main border frames the composition with a classic running ram's horn or hooked motif, another tribal symbol of strength, fertility, and protection, enclosed by narrow guard stripes with checker or diamond patterns.
Being a kilim (flatweave), this rug is lightweight yet durable, woven without pile using slit-weave techniques that allow for crisp colour separation and sharp geometric forms. Likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, this piece showcases the artistry of weavers from the eastern Caucasus, possibly from the Daghestan or Shirvan regions, where Lesghi communities historically produced these vibrant tribal textiles.
