SIZE: 10.7 X 7.2 FT.
ORIGIN: CAUCASUS
CIRCA: 1910s
MATERIAL: PURE WOOL
This antique Caucasian tribal kilim rug is a vivid, energetic flat-woven textile, showcasing the dynamic geometric patterns and bold natural dyes typical of nomadic weaving traditions from the Caucasus mountains.
The design features alternating horizontal bands of large diamond medallions and intricate latch-hook or stepped motifs, arranged in vibrant, rhythmic rows. The diamonds, often called memling guls or tribal medallions, are filled with stylised crosses, rosettes, and hooked elements, each sharply outlined to create crisp visual separation. Jagged zigzags and angular motifs add movement and texture between the diamond bands, forming a striking interplay of shapes.
The colour palette is lively and sophisticated: saturated reds, dark indigo, soft blues, ivory, muted greens, and warm camel tones, all drawn from natural vegetable dyes, giving the piece warmth and depth. The outer border is framed with a classic sawtooth or serrated edge, adding a protective symbolic layer around the powerful central pattern.
Being a kilim, this rug is woven flat without pile, using slit-weave techniques that allow the weaver to create sharp, clear patterns and bold colour shifts. Likely woven in the late 19th or early 20th century, this piece comes from a tribal group such as the Shahsavan, Karabagh, or Kazak regions, each known for distinctive regional motifs but united by their commitment to vibrant, geometric ornamentation.
