This is an antique Norwegian coverlet textile, often called a "Åklær" or "Åkle," a traditional flat-woven wool coverlet used in Norwegian homes, especially in rural areas, during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The design features a repeating geometric pattern arranged in square medallions, each framed by a bold blue outline. Inside the squares are stylised floral or star-like motifs in vivid shades of coral red, olive green, creamy white, and navy blue. These patterns are characteristic of Norwegian folk art, reflecting regional weaving traditions and symbolic meanings often tied to fertility, protection, and prosperity.
Narrow bands of smaller geometric designs in earthy greens, creams, reds, and blacks run between the rows of medallions, adding a rhythmic balance. The top and bottom borders shift to horizontal striped patterns with diamond and zigzag motifs, enhancing the textile's visual framing.
The piece is entirely flat-woven, with no pile, using traditional wool dyed with natural pigments. Its tight, precise weaving and vibrant yet earthy colour palette speak to the high skill of the weaver and the cultural importance of such textiles in Norwegian homes, where they were often displayed on beds, benches, or walls during festive occasions.
