Antique Timuri Baloch Rug 10'7" x 7'1"
SIZE: 10.7 X 7.1 FT.
ORIGIN: BALOCHISTAN
CIRCA: 1880s
MATERIAL: PURE WOOL
This antique Timuri Baloch rug is a remarkable example of tribal artistry from the Timuri subgroup, known for producing some of the most refined and elegant weavings among the Baloch tribes.
The rug features a field filled with classic Timuri tree motifs, tall, stylised trees with stepped, geometric branches, aligned in vertical rows across the deep, earthy ground. The rich, natural colour palette is dominated by deep indigo, rust, madder red, soft camel, and subtle accents of ivory, all derived from natural dyes, giving the rug a warm and mellow aged patina.
Multiple narrow borders surround the central panel, each filled with intricate, small-scale geometric patterns, including hooked shapes, latticework, and stylised floral or star motifs, adding layers of detail and rhythm. The main border, broader and more commanding, features a repeating geometric rosette or star pattern, framed by finer zigzag or meander stripes, characteristic of Timuri borders.
What sets Timuri rugs apart is their delicate, compact weave, exceptional wool quality, and rich, moody colour palette, all visible in this piece. Their motifs often carry symbolic weight, with trees representing life, protection, and continuity, while geometric patterns may reflect tribal identity or protective symbols.
This rug likely dates to the late 19th or early 20th century and, despite its tribal origin, exhibits a level of finesse that places it among the more collectible Baloch weavings.
