Vintage Anatolian Rug 5'5" x 3'6"
SIZE: 5.5 X 3.6 FT.
ORIGIN: TURKEY
CIRCA: 1960s
MATERIAL: PURE WOOL
This exquisite antique Anatolian rug is a captivating example of traditional Turkish craftsmanship, from the mid 20th century. Its design centres on a striking mihrab (prayer niche) motif with a stepped arch, rendered in a vivid brick-red field. The spandrels above and below feature charming floral sprays, framed by a panel of delicate star patterns on a soft blue ground, adding depth and contrast to the composition.
The wide main border is richly ornamented with alternating rosettes, geometric medallions, and stylised floral motifs, all interconnected by meandering vine work. The warm palette of deep reds, soft ivory, muted greens, and touches of gold reflects the natural vegetable dyes typical of Anatolian weaving traditions. The rug’s wool pile, hand-knotted on a sturdy foundation, retains much of its original lustre, while subtle age-related patina enhances its character.
This piece embodies both aesthetic beauty and cultural heritage, making it not only a decorative treasure but also a collectable artefact of Anatolian textile art.
