This vintage Turkmen Torba woollen rug is a striking example of tribal weaving, traditionally used as a decorative storage bag face by Turkmen nomads. Its horizontal format, compact dimensions, and bold geometric design reflect both functionality and aesthetic intent.

The rug features a repeating pattern of large, octagonal guls, a signature motif of Turkmen tribal art, framed within a stepped red lattice. Each gul is deeply saturated in dark browns and adorned with internal hooked and cruciform motifs rendered in red, ivory, and touches of pink. These motifs are meticulously balanced and repeated, creating a powerful rhythm across the surface.

The background is a vibrant madder red, which serves as a dramatic contrast to the dark guls and accent colours. The top border band is detailed with a narrow floral vine motif in red and green. At the same time, the lower edge retains its original flatwoven kilim finish, although worn and frayed in areas, a testament to its authentic use and age.

Woven entirely from handspun wool, the pile is dense and slightly coarse, typical of Turkmen weavings. The use of natural dyes gives the rug a warm, glowing quality, with subtle abrash enhancing its texture and depth.
