This is a striking vintage Persian Sarouk rug, handwoven from lustrous wool and celebrated for its dense pile, refined craftsmanship, and radiant colour palette.
The field is saturated in a rich cherry red, a classic hue associated with Sarouk weavings from the early to mid-20th century. The design is symmetrical and highly stylised, featuring a central floral cluster composed of curving leaves, palmettes, and abstract lotus forms in shades of ochre, deep navy, ivory, and coral. These motifs radiate outward in a rhythmic pattern, offering a sense of both order and lush botanical abundance.
Distinctive boteh (paisley) forms and floral sprays accent the upper and lower fields, while dynamic corner motifs, framed in burnt orange and indigo, create a vibrant contrast. The navy border is framed by narrow guard bands, adorned with rosette chains and flowerhead vines in soft rose and cream tones, which enhance the visual richness and depth of the composition.
The wool is tightly knotted, resulting in a velvety surface that speaks to the durability and elegance of Sarouk weaving traditions. Over time, the rug has developed a soft patina and subtle abrash, which add character and serve as a testament to its handmade heritage.
Originating from the Sarouk region of western Iran, this rug embodies the region’s renowned ability to blend regal formality with artistic flair, making it an ideal piece for traditional interiors, studies, or gallery-style rooms seeking warmth and historical depth.
