SIZE: 11.8 X 4.2 FT.
ORIGIN: TURKMENISTAN
CIRCA: 1970s
MATERIAL: PURE WOOL
This vintage Turkestan hallway runner rug is a striking woollen piece that reflects the strong geometric character and earthy palette typical of Central Asian tribal weavings. The design features a bold sequence of three large medallions aligned vertically along the centre, each framed within a diamond-shaped field. These medallions are deeply stepped in form, rendered in warm terracotta, soft rose, deep brown, and muted camel tones.
Surrounding each medallion are stylised motifs such as angular floral figures and feather-like elements that suggest movement and protection. The background shifts subtly between burnt orange and ochre, adding depth and a sense of organic flow to the composition. Small motifs are evenly spaced across the field, enhancing symmetry and visual rhythm without overwhelming the structure.
The main border frames the rug with a repeat pattern of diagonal latticework filled with small geometric elements, flanked by narrower guard borders with simplified rosettes and chevron details. The use of tonal variation through natural dyes creates a gentle abrash effect, lending authenticity and softness to the overall appearance.
Woven with handspun wool, this rug has a dense yet soft pile that makes it both durable and comfortable underfoot. Its elongated proportions make it ideal for hallways, entryways, or narrow spaces where a touch of tribal character, warmth, and texture is desired. This runner stands out for its balance of strong design and earthy elegance.
